Your home should be safe and secure for your peace of mind. In this way, you will be able to totally relax every time you spend time at your home.

This article lists down some of the ways how you can increase the security of your property.

How to Increase Security of Your Home and Yard

One of the primary things that you can do to increase the security of your home and yard is to consider automation.

In this way, you will be able to control or schedule when your lights, door locks, smoke alarms, and other safety devices will be turned on or off.

With a smart doorbell, for instance, you will be able to scare away porch pirates with a two-way talk feature.

You can also get an instant feed when someone approaches your doorway. You also have the option of installing electric gates on your property which you can also control automatically.

Rest assured that you will be able to customize the design of the devices that you intend to use to conform to the overall look of your home.

Set Up a Security System

Another thing that you can do to increase the security of your property is to set up a security system.

In this case, you have the option of installing one yourself or getting the help of the professionals to have it installed for you.

Rest assured that there are various types of security systems suitable for you depending on your budget, as well as the features that you want to have.

The key is in choosing one that is comfortable for you in all aspects.

Add Security Cameras

Make sure that your security system is installed in parallel with security cameras, but that is if your home security system doesn’t come with one yet.

As much as possible, go for security cameras that can be monitored through a mobile app to make it easy for you to view footage taken in real-time.

Other must-have features of security cameras include motion detection and night vision, as well as Wi-Fi capability and two-way communication.

It is also preferable if the security camera you go for has a local or a cloud storage option and weatherproof casing.

Invest in Motion Activated Lights

More often than not, motion-activated lights are part of a home automation system. However, if you haven’t invested in a home automation system yet, then make sure to at least get motion-activated lights.

This is one of the most viable means to keep burglars and other individuals with malicious intentions out of your property.

For sure, a sudden spotlight perhaps in your landscape or anywhere near your doors will be sufficient in startling them and preventing their break-in attempt.

Use a password for your Wi-Fi

When you invest in a home automation system or other smart devices to increase the security of your home, then it is very likely that you will leverage your internet connection to control them.

This means that you need to connect to your Wi-Fi. To take over your home, people who intend to break into your property may hack your Wi-Fi.

Thus, make sure to use a strong password for your Wi-Fi network to secure it.

Install Window Locks

After you have already properly secured your main doors and gate, make sure that you install window locks too.

In this case, you can consider installing window sensors that sound an alarm in case an intruder breaks in.

Alongside sensors though, make sure that you have reliable window locks too, particularly because windows are known to be a weak point of entry.

Rest assured that window locks are perfect even for the windows in your basement, to deter burglars and intruders.

Secure your Garage

Securing your property means making sure that your garage is also safe from intruders as this is becoming one of the most common entry points for burglars.

Keep in mind that even if they are not able to break into your home, they may find their way through your garage and ransack whatever belongings you may have there.

In this case, make sure to lock all the doors of your garage and keep the garage door opener inside your home rather than in your car.

Secure your Upper Floors Too

Aside from your garage, make sure to also secure the upper floors of your home if you have one.

Your first floor may already be fully equipped with the security systems that you can think of but you may overlook the security of your upper floors.

Keep in mind that burglars will try to do anything to break into your property, which is why it is quite sensible to install window sensors or glass-break detectors on your upper floors as well.

Try Not to Overly Conceal your Home

Sometimes, properties that are overly concealed seem to be more interesting to intruders.

Aside from this, when your home is entirely concealed, burglars are less likely to be seen when they sneak in.

Thus, try not to install extremely high hedges around your doors and windows to ensure that intruders don’t have a covered way in entering your property.

Avoid Having a Hide-a-Key

Usually, homeowners leave a spare key under the mat of the front door or even under a plant pot. While this can be quite convenient when you forget the keys to your house, this practice is also risky.

Intruders and burglars may use this to their advantage, which is why you need to break this habit.

In this way, you are less likely to be an available or feasible target, particularly when there are people already spying on your routine.

You can increase the security of your property by considering home automation or setting up a security system.

In addition to this, you can also add a security camera or invest in motion-activated lights.

Make sure to lock up your Wi-Fi as well as install window locks, in addition to securing your garage and your upper floors.

Sometimes, all it takes is in avoiding overly concealing your home or even having a spare key.
