Your sewer line is one of the most vital systems in your home, as it transports wastewater from your property to an outdoor septic tank or a municipal waste connection.

5 Signs You Need Sewer Line Replacement

Since it keeps wastewater out of your property, ensuring it is in good working condition is essential. Hence, if you constantly experience issues with it, you may need a sewer line replacement. Deciding whether you need a sewer line replacement can be tricky.

Luckily, you can spot several signs indicating severe issues in your sewage system. If you notice any of these signs, it’s essential to call a plumbing contractor immediately, so they can determine whether you need a repair or a replacement.

1. Pools of Water

A constantly soggy yard is one of the signs that tell you to have a sewer line replacement. While several things can cause water pooling, like water sprinklers or leaky outdoor fixtures, a clogged or broken sewer line is one alarming reason behind this. If you have a spongy lawn, you might notice that your grass is turning brown and dying or that patches are missing altogether.

When water seeps into the ground, it can cause a pocket of air to form beneath your yard. This may be quite large, but it won’t be visible on the surface because it’s filled with water. If you suspect that the cause of water pooling in your outdoor space is a damaged sewer line, you’ll need to call an expert plumber to assess it and fix any existing problems. Relining sewer pipes will be the best course of action if the damage is too extensive.

If left untreated, this can lead to severe damage to your property and even health issues for those living at home. Hence, it is essential to hire a plumbing contractor right away to have your sewer system fixed.

2. Low Water Pressure

When your plumbing system is working correctly, water should flow across your pipes without difficulty. If you experience low water pressure, then it may signify that you have a clogged drain or sewer line.

This would not only affect your showers or faucets, but it could also limit the water that comes through your washing machines, dishwashers, and toilets. Too much material in the pipes could cause sewage backup and overflow into your home. This can lead to serious health concerns, so immediately fixing any problem causing this blockage is essential.

3. Strong Sewage Smell

Sewer lines are buried underground, so it may be difficult to detect problems when they arise. However, a strong smell, similar to rotten eggs, in your home or yard will become more noticeable when the sewer line issue worsens.

If this cannot be addressed with repair, you would need a sewer line replacement.  Ignoring this issue could lead to more serious problems, such as flooding or mold growth in your home. So, call a plumber immediately to have your sewer system inspected.

4. Gurgling Toilets or Drains

Gas bubbles cause the gurgling sound in sewer pipes. The more gas there is, the louder the sound will be. Blockages usually cause gurgling toilets or drain in the sewer lines that prevent water and air from smoothly flowing through.

One common blockage is the overgrowth of tree roots into sewer pipes. Ultimately, this can cause damage, leading to sewage backup in your home.  If you notice this problem, call a plumber. It’s essential to get it fixed immediately because it can cause flooding or trigger diseases in the inhabitants of your home.

5. High Water Bill

An increasing water bill may signify severe issues in your plumbing system. This may be due to leaking faucets, toilets, or sewer lines. A pipe leak can occur anywhere along the length of your sewer line and can cause significant damage to your yard or basement if left untreated.

As water leaks into the ground over time, it can erode the soil around your home’s foundation and cause structural damage inside walls and floors. The longer a leak goes undetected, the more expensive it’ll be to repair or replace damaged areas in your property.

Final Thoughts

If you’re tired of dealing with recurring plumbing problems, then it’s time to call a professional. The symptoms above are significant determiners of serious issues in your plumbing system, so addressing them with repair or replacement is essential.

Remember that sewer line replacement isn’t something you can do yourself. Ensure to call an expert plumber to do the job for you so that your plumbing can run smoothly and efficiently in the coming years!
